The Miracle Known as Gym Meet

In 1929 the birth of Gym Meet transpired. No one knew it then, but this was to be more than a senseless competition for a silver cup. It was to be a miracle. However, there are a few people outside of Notre Dame who can appreciate what this phenomenon truly is.
The collaboration of over 500 girls into a stately promenade of performers appears in itself to be a miracle. This, however, is only the visual portion of the miracle. There is also a spiritual bond of excitement which forms."
After the first Gym Meet practice begins there is a hum of conversation throughout each class. The hums gradually decrease as the month of laborious practices continue, and hoarse, weary and tired captains use all their additional energy to inspire tired classmates. Suddenly there is a burst of enthusiasm as Gym Meet nears. The herds of elephants turn into synchronized marchers, the screeching vocalists begin to resemble professional singers, the inept dancers are overcome with grace, and the exhausted aerobicisers are blessed with the agility of Jane Fonda. All of the hard work and dedication is finally seen. The collaboration of over 500 girls into a stately promenade of performers appears in itself to be a miracle. There is a special secret to Gym Meet as alumnae return to relive its nostalgic moments. It seems to be a fountain which nourishes art, talent, and grace in all of us, as observers and participants. Gym Meet is a classic as its themes are so unique that audiences never tire seeing it, nor students grow weary being a part of it. Gym Meet arouses endless imagination and creativity making it a unique tradition for everyone. The miracle continues in the esprit de corps it creates within and between classes, alumnae, parents and all who will attend it. Finally, the great night comes and the air fills with excitement. Gym Meet becomes a miracle in every heart forever and no longer a quest for the silver cup.
