Jane Kroh Satterfield '60

Jane Kroh Satterfield ’60, has drawn upon her innate strength and deep compassion to be determined, caring, and dedicated in her roles as devoted wife and mother, businesswoman, loyal NDP alumnae, trusted advisor, and friend.

Graduating from NDP in 1960, Jane blazed a non-traditional career path and graduated from the University of Maryland in 1964 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Physical Therapy and soon thereafter a master’s from The Johns Hopkins University.

Working as a physical therapist, Jane saw firsthand how parents of children with special needs juggled doctor’s appointments, physical therapy, and speech therapy all the while attempting to keep a job, clean house, and put dinner on the table every night. Responding with compassion, she sought a solution. With the help of two colleagues, Care Rehab, a start-up company that brought health care services to children with special needs in their homes and eventually into schools and school systems, was born in 1984. Jane’s high level of care, customer service, and business savvy turned what was essentially a basement startup into a large-scale operation with national reach. Eventually, Care Rehab, now Care Resources, grew to become one of the nation’s premier rehabilitation companies.

Jane’s accomplishments are well known in the Baltimore community: she received the highest award in Maryland for Physical Therapy; the Kendall Award. She was the first and only female member for the first 10 years of the Maryland Chapter of the National CEO organization. And this year, the University of Maryland School of Medicine established a full-time tenure-track faculty position in her honor: The Jane Kroh Satterfield Professorship in Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science.

To say Jane was all career sells her short for she also demonstrated in her personal life the importance of being well-rounded, grounded, engaged, faithful, and involved in the world. She embodied the values of the School Sisters of Notre Dame and lives the core values of the Gospel.

Dedicated to her family, Jane was married to husband Jody for more than 50 years and had two children, Carey, NDP Class of 1990, and Kristopher. Her five beloved grandsons were always front and center—in fact, their picture was silkscreened on her purse.

Although the next generation of Satterfields is all boy, Jane faithfully supported NDP because she saw in each student unleashed potential. A passionate advocate for Notre Dame, she fiercely supported the opportunities given to girls here and demonstrated her commitment through her time, talent, and treasure. Jane supported three separate NDP scholarship funds; she served on NDP’s Board of Trustees for six years and was a trustee associate.

Jane did this all to ensure that the impact of a Notre Dame education continues for years to come. We are blessed to count her among our alumnae and were deeply proud to award her the Mother Caroline Friess Alumna of the Year Award in 2018.

Editor's Note: Jane Satterfield passed away in May 2020.
