Notre Dame Preparatory School’s budding computer science program celebrated two wonderful honors: the inaugural induction of students into the new Computer Science Honor Society (CSHS) and the receipt of the College Board's AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award.
In January, NDP inducted seven students into the CSHS, including seniors Alexandra Anderson, Grace Gellerman, Julianna Grasso, Emma Kozak, Megan Santamore and Sofia Rest; and junior Erika Ezumba. Gloria Flach ’77, former COO of Northrop Grumman, delivered keynote remarks during the virtual ceremony, congratulating the girls on their honor and speaking to them about achieving their personal best in school, in their careers, and in their personal lives.
To be inducted into the CSHS, students are required to maintain an advanced grade scoring in one or more computer science courses and meet a corresponding mathematics co-requirement. “We are pleased and proud to be able to recognize the achievements of our students with this new honor society, and we look forward to the service opportunities and recognition that it will bring to NDP,” explained Neil Hrdlick, computer science/engineering teacher and founding moderator of the CSHS.
Additionally, NDP has earned the College Board's AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award for expanding young women’s access to both AP Computer Science A and AP Computer Science Principles—one of only 56 schools to be recognized for achieving this important result in both courses!
The creation of this new chapter of the CSHS, which operates under the guidance of the Computer Science Teachers Association, and the AP Honor are wonderful outgrowths of our school’s vibrant Science-Technology-Engineering-Arts-Mathematics (STEAM) program. As STEAM continues to become a ubiquitous aspect of all our lives, NDP is pleased to prepare students for the challenges of tomorrow.
