Another Summer of Camp Umoja Brings Fun and Friendship to Notre Dame Prep

Notre Dame Prep's campus was brimming with excitement the week of July 7–11 as Camp Umoja returned for another summer of fun, learning, and community connection. The weeklong day camp welcomed children from Baltimore City Public Housing for a memorable experience filled with games, crafts, swimming, and cultural exploration.

This year’s theme, “All Around the World,” encouraged campers to explore and celebrate cultures from across the globe. On opening day, campers jumped right into the fun—creating personalized passports for a campuswide scavenger hunt, crafting name tags and picture frames, and participating in Red Cross-certified swim lessons. With the help of dedicated student counselors, faculty, and staff, the week was off to an energetic and joyful start.

Throughout the week, campers continued their global adventure. They made homemade binoculars, learned about famous European landmarks during “Umojademics,” and enjoyed a refreshing pool session practicing their kickboard skills. Cristi Barry and Café NDP also hosted a special luncheon where campers and counselors came together to share stories and laughs over a delicious meal.

The week also featured special moments of community engagement. Thanks to NDP student Aaliyah P. ’27 and Mrs. Anne Wisniewski—former NDP Head Librarian, mother of two NDP alumnae, and current leader of the Knott Scholarship Funds Guide Program and Student Council—Camp Umoja welcomed Knott Scholars from local schools who hosted a book fair and reading session in the Mother Philemon Doyle Library. Campers also got creative with arts and crafts projects inspired by Australian Aboriginal dot painting and traditional Asian folding fans.

To round out the week, campers showcased their talents during a spirited talent show and completed a scavenger hunt around campus—finishing the week with smiles, cheers, and lasting memories. Thank you to all of our student counselors, faculty, staff, and returning alumnae who helped make this year’s camp such a success!

About Camp Umoja

Founded in 1985, Camp Umoja serves children ages 6–11 and is one of NDP’s most cherished summer traditions. The camp offers swimming lessons, arts and crafts, educational activities, and mentoring from student counselors from NDP and area boys’ schools. The heart of Camp Umoja lies in the one-on-one attention counselors provide, fostering friendships, skill-building, and personal growth for both campers and volunteers. The spirit of unity—“Umoja” in Swahili—extends beyond the camp week through Club Umoja, a year-round commitment by NDP students to maintain bonds with their campers.
